A second Holocaust: MEMRI on Al Jazeera

MEMRI is an Israeli organisation which translates regional media viciousness into English. It is regularly accused of misrepresentation – but usually by people in denial about the bigotry it uncovers in Arabic and Farsi.

Here is Harry’s Place on Yusuf Al Qaradawi (if you are boycotting Israel and you don’t know who Yusuf Al Qaradawi is, then shame on you)

“From Al-Jazeera TV on January 28 and 30, 2009.

Sheikh Yousuf Al-Qaradhawi: Throughout history, Allah has imposed upon the [Jews] people who would punish them for their corruption. The last punishment was carried out by Hitler. By means of all the things he did to them – even though they exaggerated this issue – he managed to put them in their place. This was divine punishment for them. Allah willing, the next time will be at the hand of the believers.

January 28, 2009:
To conclude my speech, I’d like to say that the only thing I hope for is that as my life approaches its end, Allah will give me an opportunity to go to the land of Jihad and resistance, even if in a wheelchair. I will shoot Allah’s enemies, the Jews, and they will throw a bomb at me, and thus, I will seal my life with martyrdom. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. Allah’s mercy and blessings upon you.

Nobody is surprised by this any more.”

The important thing here is that MEMRI footage was used on Al Jazeera, which is indicative of confidence in MEMRI. Nope, I surely got that wrong, noodle brain that I am.

Don’t leave it to worried Jews (and women, and gay people) to care about phenomena like Al Qaradawi. He is really pretty big in the Middle East.

Is that the best you can do? Look, this stuff needs to be translated because it is pure poison and the people who usually stand up against poison when it’s directed against minority group are curiously silent when the group under attack is Jews. See Jonathan Freedland in today’s Guardian for more on this. It is up to the rest of us, who want to use MEMRI to make points, to do the homework and be transparent about the context. As I have by linking to a thorough crit of what Al Qaradawi says, above.

My point is that in your opening paragraph you have misrepresented MEMRI, whatever the rights or wrongs of this individual case.

You now talk about being transparant about the context of the story. Isn’t that a little ironic?

MEMRI is part of the problem. It fosters hatred and misunderstanding through selective reporting and providing quotes without context. This is not surprising when you look at who’s running the show. See also: http://bit.ly/6ilR and http://bit.ly/Sni6
