Comments policy
Comments will be moderated. The moderators reserve the right to edit all or part of any comment according to the principles below – so do save a copy of your contribution. We will make it clear to readers when we delete or edit.
Anything goes except:
- Unsubstaniated ad hominems or insults
- Red-, Green-, Jew-, or any other baiting (although if it’s sufficiently worked out to worry us we may allow this in order to highlight and argue with it)
- Claims that the moderators know are misleading or incorrect
- Deliberate attempts to derail a discussion
- Anything that we are aware would incriminate the moderators
Keep looking – this policy is subject to changes.
“Claims that the moderators know are incorrect”
Not sure what this means – although I’m sure the comments policy isn’t directed at people like me as I’m always civilised in my disagreements
As I read it this is a very dangerous policy as it essentially gives you the right to delete anything you *think* you know to be incorrect. Surely it’s better just to disagree and put that person right as it provides an opportunity for you to put your point across.
I’m absolutely for the rest and I think it’s a very good idea to have a comments policy.

Jimjay, if you have been an observer of anti-Zionism for as long as I have, you will know that people say black is white. People also put forward incorrect facts in the climate change debate, and in the debate about vegetarianism. That point exists to avoid this blog hosting misleading or incorrect stuff, whether posted in good faith or bad.
Dangerous is an exaggeration. This is our blog and the rules are ours – we are putting them up and can be judged by them. Our policy does not interfere with freedom of speech – there’s the rest of the Web for that.
We will be transparent about deletions – thank you for reminding us to include that.

No argument from me on this – I just think it’s good to give people lee way to say things you think are wrong, its always important to have an open mind and listen to what’s being said I think.
That obviously does not include abusive or racist posts or give people carte blanche to behave poorly – but if we don’t discuss with people we disagree with then our ideas aren’t worth anything.

Jimjay, I’m not talking about opinions I think are wrong, I’m talking about factually incorrect stuff.
I’m not averse to publishing racist stuff as long as there is somebody prepared to take it apart. Racism – particularly that which comes from the left – is cloaked in the language of anti-Zionism and isn’t necessarily easy to recognise.
David Hirsh has written extensively on this and in 2007 authored probably the most comprehensive and accessible bit of work in the area: Anti-Zionism and Antisemitism: Cosmopolitan Reflections (free PDF book). In fact I’m going to put that on the links right now. Remiss of me.
